Dental FAQs

Want a permanent, custom crown in one visit?
Dentistry has come a long way. Now you can have a custom, white, permanent crown placed in a single visit. For more than two years, BlueWave Dentistry has worked with Sirona’s amazing CEREC 3D – CAD/CAM technology for single visit dentistry. By taking three-dimensional computer images of your teeth, our in-house CEREC milling unit can fabricate a precise, permanent restoration made of fine, tooth-colored porcelain.

The days of two-visit crowns are long gone. In fact, CEREC can also create inlays and onlays, wonderful options to repair large areas of decay that require more than a filling, but don’t warrant a full crown. Inlays and onlays can also restore strength and beauty to a tooth that formerly had a large amalgam/dark filling.

Your time is priceless, and so is your smile. Let Dr’s Sweeney and Biggerstaff make the most of both! If you know that you need a crown, inlay, or onlay, or if you want to have old, dark/amalgam fillings replaced with esthetic white restorations, call to reserve your appointment with Dr. Sweeney or Dr. Biggerstaff today.

Does your smile have chips, gaps, or imperfections?
What makes your smile less than perfect? For most patients, chips, discolorations, gaps, misalignment, or misshapen teeth are top culprits. We at BlueWave Dentistry believe that everyone deserves a confident, attractive smile. Don’t you? The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentists (AACD) conducted a study that found people with an attractive smile are considered more friendly, successful, and intelligent. We all want that for ourselves

The Dr’s at BlueWave Dentistry and our team are plugged in to the latest developments in cosmetic dental materials and procedures. We offer teeth whitening options, tooth-colored fillings and restorations, cosmetic bonding, and many other procedures to improve your smile’s appearance. However, in many cases the best, custom option to redesign a smile is porcelain veneers.

Each set of porcelain veneers is handcrafted by an expert dental ceramist for a unique, natural look. Dr’s Sweeney & Biggerstaff have developed a very close relationship with one of the best dental labs in the region. The dental ceramists at Discovery Dental Studio will custom-fabricate your veneers to the perfect size, shape, contour, and color to match your smile.

Worried about missing teeth?
If you have ever been aggravated by the function of your bridge, partial, or denture, maybe it’s time for you to consider the benefits of implants.

Give your self-confidence a boost with the natural look, feel, and function of dental implants. At BlueWave Dentistry, implants have given a new lease on life to hundreds of patients. Enhance your appearance, improve your speech, and smile like you have never smiled before.

Implants are simply replacements for natural teeth. Implants are placed in the gum and jaw and stay permanently fixed. Unlike dentures or partials, implants allow you to have comfort and function again with the look of natural teeth.

Does your smile say who you are?
A smile instantly projects your self-image, personality, and how you feel about the world around you. It transcends every language, crossing any communication barrier.

A radiant smile can enhance your social and professional life every day. Esthetic dentistry has advanced so that it is not a major operation like plastic surgery. Visualize yourself after one or two appointments with the perfect smile you have always dreamed of. Dreams do come true. See for yourself in our smile gallery.

Do you have jaw pain or frequent headaches?
Many people grind or clench their teeth and are often unaware of it. Although teeth grinding (bruxism) and clenching may happen at any time during the day, it often happens at night while you are asleep. These habits are multifactorial and can have many different causes. Stress is a very common cause, but there can also be discrepancies in the way your teeth fit together and function that can lead to clenching and bruxing. Often the reason is not known.

Symptoms of clenching and grinding can include a sore, tired jaw, headaches, earaches, and sensitive teeth. Often there are no symptoms, and many patients are not even aware of their habit. In these cases, the diagnosis is usually made from observing some of the cardinal signs during an exam. These can include chipped, worn, flattened, grooved, and/or cracked teeth. If left unchecked, severe cases can lead to extensive loss of tooth structure and function and require rehabilitation.

In most cases, treatment involves the use of occlusal splints or guards that are worn primarily at night. These appliances can come in many different shapes and sizes and are tailored to each specific case. In most cases, the primary function of the appliance is to protect the teeth from fracture or wear, and to decrease the pressure placed on the jaw-closing muscles. This in affect “deprograms” the muscles and leads to relatively rapid relief from muscle tension and thus soreness and headaches. The most common appliance used by the doctors at BlueWave Dentistry is the NTI-tss. It is one of the only dental appliances approved by the FDA for the treatment of migraine and tension-type headaches.

If you have been experiencing any of the symptoms of clenching or grinding, or have noticed fractured, worn or cracked teeth, call us here at BlueWave Dentistry.

Nervous about visiting the dentist?
Dr. Sweeney and Dr. Biggerstaff understand dental anxiety, fear, or phobia. They know that some patients don’t respond well to traditional numbing agents and those who need lengthy or multiple procedures may avoid dental care because they don’t want to sit in the dentist’s chair for hours.

Whatever your concern about dentistry, our doctors and our team want to help you overcome your issue and experience the rewards of peaceful dentistry. To become a sedation dentist, Dr. Sweeney studied and received certification to administer in-office oral conscious sedation. In addition, Dr. Biggerstaff earned a doctorate degree in pharmacy (PharmD) from UNC-Chapel Hill before attending dental school, and has years of experience dispensing and prescribing anti-anxiety and oral sedative medications. Every patient is different and Drs. Sweeney and Biggerstaff are trained to provide the correct medication for you at the proper dose to have the safest and most comfortable dental visit possible.

Rest assured whatever your level of need, our doctors at BlueWave Dentistry can help. All you have to do is let us know that you would like sedation. We’ll talk with you about your concerns, review your medical history, and then recommend the best option for your unique case.

Want to finance your dental work? Have payment questions?
In order to serve you better and continue to provide the highest quality of care possible, we request that you pay for dental services at your appointment. We have a number of options from which you can choose to pay for your dental visit. We accept all major credit cards, cash, and checks. We also accept medical and dental payment options such as CareCredit. Many times, we can arrange an interest free payment plan so that your payments are spread out over time. If you are not familiar with any of these plans, we can assist you in setting up an account. There may be certain procedures where a deposit is required before treatment begins.

It is our pleasure to assist you in maximizing your insurance benefits by completing your claim forms and filing these for you. If your carrier is up-to date, we will transmit the claims electronically before the end of the treatment day! However, we can only estimate the amount your insurance company will pay and in some cases there is a difference between the estimate and actual payment. In cases where the insurance company pays less than expected, you are required to pay the unpaid balance with in 30 days. We file all kinds of insurance.

BlueWave Dentistry has not been assigned a provider for any insurance companies. Many “preferred provider” type insurance companies dictate that only the lowest quality materials and treatments are adequate for their subscribers. We disagree. We know that all of our patients deserve to be treated equally and be given all options when treatment is necessary. This way, you, not your insurance company, are left to decide what is right for you.

The relationship between you and your dentist should be just that, and not between your dentist and an insurance company. However, we will be glad to assist you while working with your insurance company to maximize any benefits you have. We are committed to helping you in any way we can, with or without insurance, either “in-network” or “out-of-network.”

Do you love how your teeth feel when you leave the dentist?
At BlueWave Dentistry, we recognize that preventive care is the cornerstone of a beautiful smile. Our dental hygienists are committed to your periodontal care by detecting potential problems and recommending appropriate treatment.

Using state-of-the-art instruments, digital radiography, intraoral cameras, and a complete periodontal screening, we always strive for personalized, comprehensive treatment planning while maintaining your absolute comfort.

In today’s world with such amazing technology, we can transform your smile to the one you have always wanted. For teeth that are in relatively great shape, we can close gaps using tooth-colored fillings. Sometimes this is referred to as “Bonding”. For really discolored, chipped, or broken down teeth, we usually use conservative Veneers to restore your smile.

Each set of porcelain veneers is handcrafted by a highly trained dental ceramist for a unique, natural look. Then, we will try them in and get approval from you, the patient. After you are 100% satisfied with the fit, shade/color, and form, we will adhere the permanent porcelain veneers to your front teeth for a lasting, stain-resistant smile that will make you feel great about yourself.

Want to have an all-white smile again?
If your smile is tarnished with dark/amalgam fillings from years passed, let Dr’s Sweeney & Biggerstaff restore your all-white, natural-looking smile with gorgeous, tooth-colored fillings, porcelain crowns, inlays, or onlays.

Our all-white fillings are made from durable composite resin, a material that we also use to repair chips, gaps, and imperfections for esthetic dentistry. Dr’s Sweeney & Biggerstaff use CEREC for one-visit crowns, inlays, and onlays, as well. Depending upon your case, you may be able to regain your bright, beautiful smile – and the confidence that will accompany it – in one or two visits to BlueWave Dentistry.
